Day 2: Tour of the viewpoints

To get acquainted, this first cycling leg features the beautifully laid-out and breathtaking Miradores (viewpoints) on the program. Stunning views in all directions of the island and a constant change of vegetation. El Hierro is also called “the unknown beauty” or “the forgotten island.” Even today only a few tourists find their way here.

Day 3: To the Old End of the World

Along the southern flank of the island we visit the Ermita Virgen de Los Reyes chapel and pilgrimage site, which houses the island’s patron saint, as well as the unique “slanted trees,” the Sabinas, the juniper species Juniperus turbinata most represented here worldwide. Another highlight of the tour is the descent to the Orchilla Lighthouse with swimming opportunities and a visit to the former zero meridian.

Length: 60 km; Elevation gain: 1,200 m.

Day 4: Beach excursion with fish dinner

After yesterday’s long tour, today you roll leisurely downhill from the accommodation through the lava fields of El Lajial to the island’s most popular bathing cove, Cala de Tacorón. Then you visit the fishing port La Restinga in the marine protected area and the southernmost point of Spain, “El Salto,” and perhaps enjoy a freshly caught fish in one of the fish restaurants.

Day 5: The Roof of the Island, Pico Malpaso

The island’s highest point, Pico de Malpaso at 1,501 m, is your goal today. Beforehand, you make a detour to the El Julan Archaeological Interpretation Center to learn about the history of the Bimbachen, the island’s indigenous people. Another highlight of the tour is the “Pino Piloto,” a mighty and unique tree in the pine forest.

Length: 35 km; Elevation gain: 800 m.

Day 6: From the High Plain to the East Coast

Not for the faint of heart is the descent from the mountain village Isora to the Timijiraque beach and the Puerto de la Estaca port. The ride rewards you with spectacular views in the “Andes of El Hierro.” At the bottom, enjoy a refreshing swim at one of the two beaches and tasty tapas at the harbor bar. From here you continue to the island’s capital Valverde and the hamlet Tiñor, returning to El Pinar.

Day 7: The crown jewel of the tour

The crown route takes you from El Pinar again via El Julan and past the chapel of the island’s patron saints into the “Pineapple Valley,” El Golfo. You traverse the valley and the island’s “hidden capital” La Frontera and ride up the spectacular mountain road to the enchanted forest La Llanía. From there you enjoy the descent through the mystical beech- and broom shrub forest back to El Pinar, perhaps with a stop at the grill and campsite Hoyo de Morcillo. This tour once again shows the island’s remoteness and its charm.
